This is highly dependent on the machines use and existing configuration. Contact Alaska Craft to discuss your machine needs and options we can provide to give you the safest most productive machine possible.
Confirm material type and density, required capacity and cycle time, machine hydraulic flow/pressure and number of circuits, lifting capacity at working radius, need for rotation, coupler compatibility, environmental requirements (dust, noise), expected duty cycle, wear-part availability, and total installed cost including any machine hydraulic upgrades.
Clamshells are preferred for free-flowing bulk commodities; orange-peel grapples for mixed or irregular cargo; magnets for ferrous scrap. Rotating versions improve placement accuracy into hoppers, trucks, or railcars. Dust-control features and sealed designs are important in environmentally sensitive port and terminal locations. Alaska Craft can provide any of these tools needed including self-contained units if your current dockside crane does not have line power or controls.
Alaska Craft offers DRKhorse hammers from 250 ft/lb up to 15,000 ft/lb but if your application calls for the biggest strongest breaker ask us about the line of Fractum Breakers with devastating energy ratings over 184,000 ft/lb.
Alaska Craft prefers pin grabber quick couplers on machines and will work with customers to identify your machine configurations for compatibility. Tools can be provided with or without the top hat and top hats can be built to a customers needs. Alaska Craft can provide tools with integrated hydraulic coupling in the quick coupler to speed up tool changes with systems like Oilquick.
This is highly dependent on the size, brand, age and configuration of your base machine. Alaska Craft will work with you to identify your machines configuration and provide recommendations on compatible tools or possible modifications needed to your carrier. Alaska Craft can provide turnkey packages of carriers and tools if needed.
Orange-peel (multi-tine) grapples are the standard choice for most scrap handling because their tines penetrate piles and grip irregular shapes effectively. Four- or five-tine designs are common; closed or semi-closed tines help retain smaller pieces. Magnets are preferred when the material is primarily clean ferrous metal and selective handling is required. For demolition and wrecking, a positionable/rotating grapple is often preferred mounted on a standard excavator. These grapples allow more precise grabbing of material and more power to pull and separate materials for sorting and demolition. Alaska Craft can supply grapples from small mini excavator sized units up to giant ship loading grapples including large self-powered, remote-control units.
Onboard payload systems display real-time bucket or grab weight and cumulative totals in the cab. They help operators hit target weights consistently, reduce under- and overloading, improve cycle efficiency, and provide production data for management. Many systems also support tip-off functions and daily reporting. Alaska Craft can help integrate carrier based weigh systems or work with after market systems to provide payload systems for your machine.
DRKhorse offers the best demolition tools available in a full product line of every different type and size; Hydraulic hammers, shears, crackers, pulverizers. Crushers, grapples, clam buckets, rippers, screens, forks, spears etc. Alaska Craft works with our customers to understand their needs and specific requirements and use our years of industry experience to select the most appropriate tool or tools for the job.
Electric machines deliver lower energy costs, zero local emissions, quieter operation, and reduced maintenance in high-utilization fixed or semi-fixed locations with reliable power. Diesel machines remain preferred for full mobility, multi-shift continuous operation without charging constraints, and sites lacking adequate electrical infrastructure. Dual-power designs offer a practical middle ground at many docks. Alaska Craft works with Multi Docker to provide Electric conversions on Caterpillar equipment.
Purpose-built material handlers typically offer elevated cabs, longer purpose-designed booms/sticks, higher lift capacities at reach, and optimized hydraulics for continuous grab or magnet work. Standard excavators can perform the same tasks with appropriate attachments but often have lower visibility, less optimized reach, and lower sustained productivity in dedicated bulk or scrap handling roles.
